Earlier this spring I shared a 小飞机加速器下载 using the new Farmhouse Flannels II collection by Primitive Gatherings for Moda. The colors in this collection are warm, earthy and masculine, and the prints include an assortment of traditional plaid, stripe and houndstooth. It’s the perfect collection for a striking guy quilt! When my son saw the quilt I had made, he piped up and said he needed a new quilt too . . . and out of the same fabric! That is music to a quilting mom’s ears, isn’t it? I was so inspired by Luke’s request that I sketched out a new pattern with his input, and the result is this: Hometime.

Hometime is a fat quarter friendly quilt that measures 70 1/2” x 84 1/2”. It features a large barn block in the center, surrounded by timeless hourglass blocks. As the pattern design evolved, Luke suggested that the quilt should only have top and bottom borders, and that they should be different colors. Clearly collaboration is a good thing.  I would not have thought to do that, but I love the end result.

Both Luke and I are thrilled with the striking machine quilting on Hometime, which was done by the fabulous Starlit Bear of Starlit Quilts. Star used a pattern called Diagonal Plaid, which is contemporary but timeless. The tight overall pattern adds visual interest to a quilt that has minimal color variation. Both the quilting and the cozy flannel make this a quilt you want to reach out and touch. Thanks so much, Star! Once again, you knocked it out of the park!

Hometime seemed like the perfect name for this pattern, since it was created while both Luke and I were working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic . . . a spring we will never forget. The silver lining during that dire situation was the time we spent together as a family. Evenings and weekends were filled with walks, talks, puzzles, games, home improvement projects, yard work and also quilt design.

The last time I wrote about my return to cross stitching, the snow was flying and it was ice fishing season in Minnesota. Friends, my progress has been very slow . . . pretty darn cute, but very slow. Here’s my start on the Jack Frost’s Tree Farm sampler, which I ordered from Fat Quarter Shop.

I wrote two other blog posts about my return to cross stitch. Maybe one of them will inspire you to pick up a needle and thread as well. Quilting will always be my favorite hobby, but it’s nice to have other creative outlets.

Every time I pick up the needle and stitch, I enjoy it.  It’s so satisfying to watch those wee little stitches come together to create a lovely scene in miniature.  This winter sampler may not be completed until Christmas 2021, but that’s okay. I’ll keep at it!

If you’re a quilter, chances are you love buffalo check and gingham. These timeless fabrics exude a sense of warmth, comfort, and belonging. Buffalo check in particular has become a hot design trend, a contemporary classic. I’m excited to share a new quilt pattern with you today, one that pairs a buffalo check motif with oversized, modern pumpkins and bold, classic stars: 飞机加速器破解!

Buffalo Check Autumn finishes at 72 1/2” x 84 1/2”. For your reference, in my photographs I have layered it atop a coverlet on a queen-sized bed. The quilt fits the visual space on the bed so nicely, but it would also look lovely on a smaller bed or tossed casually on a sofa.

The sewing construction for this quilt is straight forward. If you can handle sewing stripsets, half square triangles and corner triangles, then making this quilt will be a snap. The only tricky part (I promise it’s not too tricky) is that you have to pay attention to the pattern of whites, lights and darks in the buffalo check. But don’t worry. My pattern includes lots of tips and reminders along the way.

For the pattern designer (me) the trickiest part of making this quilt was determining which white, light and dark fabrics would work together to create an authentic looking buffalo check, while not overpowering the pumpkins or stars. After much testing, I settled on three Moda Bella Solids that I think work beautifully together.  (I’ve listed the Bella Solid names in the material requirements near the end of this post.) 

I absolutely love my denim/navy stars, which were created with Moda’s Indigo Chambray (#12051 13) and the navy text print from Sweetwater’s Sweet Tea collection. But I had also considered sewing black stars or purple stars, or a combination of black and purple stars, for a Halloween vibe. I’m eager to see the fabric choices other quilters make for their Buffalo Check Autumn quilts. Please keep me posted on social media if you make this quilt.

Now I have to give a heart-felt shout out to Jennifer of Farm Fresh Stitches, who did the wonderful machine quilting.  Jennifer and I messaged back and forth trying to decide on the right quilting motif. She absolutely crushed it with this selection, which we think resembles the first leaves sprouting on a pumpkin seedling. As it turns out, Jennifer grew up on a family farm that raised hundreds of acres of pumpkins. As her father drove the tractor, she sat on a little seat on the planter, where her job was to turn a wheel that dispensed the seeds. We were both a little emotional having this conversation across the miles . . . two grown up farm girls with a shared love of quilting.

Quilt panel giveaway with Quilt Girls

I don’t want to startle anyone, but Christmas is only five and a half months away! Do you have all of your gift sewing projects lined up? Or, are you stumped and stalled by what to make for your loved ones?  Are you hesitant to start a quilt because you won’t be able to finish it by the holidays? Well then, I have an idea for you: start with a festive quilt panel and add some borders or simple blocks to make it larger. You’ll have a quilt top finished in record time.  You could probably even complete more than one. To get the ball rolling, the kind folks at Quilt Girls have sent me two quilt panels to give away!

Making a quilt from a panel is a great idea if you are short on time. But more than that, today’s digitally printed quilt panels are beautiful and rich in color. The two pretty panels that we’re giving away measure 35” x 44”. One features a jolly Santa Claus quieting a cardinal, and the other features a darling snowman in a serene winter setting. Either of these panels from Quilt Girls would make a wonderful foundation for a quilt gift for someone you love.

I want to share a few tips and ideas on sewing with a quilt panel. First off, while the manufacturer may describe the panel as being 35” by 44”, that may or may not include the white (non-printed) area surrounding the image.  Also, the image may be printed ever-so-slightly askew.  Fabric is shifty, so that can happen. You will definitely want to square up your panel and remove any of the surrounding white area.

If you plan to add blocks or a pieced border, you’ll also want to trim it to a measurement that makes for easy block calculations. For instance, if I were to add borders or blocks to one of these panels, I could trim it to 33 1/2” by 42 1/2”.  Why this measurement? 33 and 42 are both divisible by 3.  That would allow me to surround the panel with fabric squares (or blocks) that were 3 1/2” (unfinished). Here is an example.

Since most quilt panels will feature a dominant figure in the center, surrounded by secondary or background art, you typically will be able to trim the panel to any dimensions you like without hurting the overall design. You’ll have to do a bit of math to determine what makes sense for your plan or what gives you the most options. For instance, if I trimmed the panel to 32 1/2” by 40 1/2”, I would have more options, since both 32 and 40 are divisible by 2, 4 and 8. 

Probably the easiest concept of all is to simply surround the trimmed panel with borders. You could use a solid inner border to frame the panel, and then surround that with a pretty coordinating fabric for the outer border.

Another option is to sew blocks along one side of the panel, along with borders. Look at your quilting books and patterns for ideas on blocks you might like to add to your quilt panel. The sky is the limit!

It was both challenging and rewarding to strike out on my own path. Once it was time to join the blocks, I deviated from the pattern layout just a bit. The navy was so dominant, that I moved the blocks around until that color seemed better balanced throughout the quilt.  

The pattern calls for one neutral border, but I chose to add both an inner and outer border to my quilt top. Adding a navy outer border was the right finishing touch for my quilt.
